1107 / 1149 Compressor / Limiters

The 1107 and 1149 are compact 2 channel solid-state VCA-based compressor / limiters that can operate as individual channels, stereo or multichannel by linking several units together.

KEY inputs are electronic with transformers as an option. An automatic fast-acting mains power-fail bypass is built in as standard.

Two versions are currently available:

  • 1107 Broadcast Compressor with transformer-coupled inputs and outputs.
  • 1149 Precision Compressor with electronic-coupled inputs and outputs.

Key Features

  • Press-button switches are electronically latching and illuminated.
  • Rotary switches allow the set up of accurate and repeatable control configurations.
  • Extensive use is made of relays for switching of both audio and control signals – this allows switching to take place exactly where it is required without compromising signal integrity or overall performance of the unit.

Operation

With the exception of the link switches, each channel is operationally identical. Input level is constantly monitored and displayed on the upper bargraph meter. The lower bargraph normally monitors the amount of gain reduction, but can be switched (by the yellow O/P switch) to monitor the output signal.

Normally the channel input signal is used to drive the VCA control system. Under certain circumstances an alternative (or “KEY”) input can be used to drive the VCA. It is selected by the red KEY switch. If it is deemed that this is undesirable in a particular broadcast environment the KEY switch can be easily disabled.

The signal dynamics controls are a conventional set of five comprising:

  • THRESHOLD to set the point at which compression will start to take place. It is graduated in steps of 4dB from -28dBu to +12dBu. The transition into compression at the threshold set point is of a soft-knee characteristic.
  • ATTACK to set how fast the feed-forward VCA control circuit responds to an above-threshold signal.
  • RELEASE to set the time it takes for the output of the unit to recover from a compression or limiting event. The release time can either be one of the 12 fixed times, or an automatic release (activated by the green AUTO switch) which works on a programme-dependant dual time-constant: short-duration peaks that initiate compression are released quickly, whilst long duration high-level signals result in a longer release time.
  • GAIN to compensate for level-loss due to compression or limiting can be added in 2dB increments, to a maximum of +20dB.
  • RATIO to set the amount of compression that is applied to an above-threshold signal. There are 6 steps, starting at a gentle 1.5:1 and ending at a compression ratio of infinity, i.e. limiting.
The compressor / limiter is switched into circuit by the IN switch which glows blue when activated.

The VCA is always in the signal path, it is merely the control signal that is enabled or disabled by the IN switch.

The LINK switch has two operating modes – the selection of which is preset inside the unit.

  • Independent Controls – (LINK switch glows green) has both Channel 1 and Channel 2 controls active and independent. Whichever channel is providing the greatest amount of gain reduction affects both channels by applying that gain reduction to both channels.
  • Left Controls Only – (LINK switch glows red) has only Channel 1 controls active and their settings affect both channels. Whichever channel is providing the greatest amount of gain reduction affects both channels by applying that gain reduction to both channels.
With the gain reduction being a combination of both channels, only the Channel 1 gain reduction meter is active. The Channel 1 IN switch controls both channels; the Channel 2 IN switch follows it.

The yellow EXT LINK switch allows multiple 1107 units to be connected together to form a multi-channel compressor / limiter which has dynamics processing applications in surround-sound formats such as 5.1 or 7.1.

When used in this configuration, it is recommended that the LINK switch of each 1107 be configured for independent controls.
